Haiti: An Italian journalist killed in Haiti


A sports journalist of Italian Francesco Fantoli, passed away Sunday after he was hit yesterday by a bullet to the chest. The journalist and businessman had completed a transaction in a bank's capital when he was attacked.

Dnase a statement issued Monday, the Government of the Republic - through its Minister of Culture and Communication, Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue - condemned this crime.

Mrs. Lassègue also said that Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive has asked the Justice Minister, Paul Denis, to instruct the competent judicial authorities so that they engage appropriate legal action against bandits. Marie Laurence J. Lassegue sent condolences to the government for victims' families and close associates of the murdered journalist.

SOS Journalists also condemned the murder of the journalist, calling the judicial authorities to initiate an immediate investigation to identify, arrest, try and convict the guilty according to law.

In a statement, the secretary general of SOS Journalists, Guyler C. Delva, deplored the upsurge of insecurity that continues to claim victims in society.

"Judicial authorities and police must redouble efforts to save the bandits who resurface out of harm's way", said Mr. Delva saying that impunity is one of the main sources of the insecurity.
