Haiti: Candidates betrayed by their past

Several candidates in the upcoming legislative, mostly survivors of the Lavalas regime, attract lightning organizations defending human rights. Murders, rape, armed robbery, destruction of private property under Lavalas are the main accusations against the candidate indexed.
Nahoun Marcellus, Jocelerme Privert, Elie Andre Carlito, Biron Odigi and Dr. Sinal Sergot are some candidates in the upcoming legislative indexed by human rights organizations for their involvement in any way in cases of murder, rape , theft ... Some of these candidates have questionable past complaints formally filed against them in court. This is the case of former Lavalas officials who dream of joining their fellow Moses Jean-Charles to Parliament.

Former Interior Minister under the second presidency of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Jocelerme Privert, looking to land the only Senate seat available for the Department of Nippes the next election. After the rejection of his nomination during the recent Senate, he returned to the stage under the banner of platform presidential INITE. Pending publication of the list of candidates approved by the Provisional Electoral Council, his candidacy is considered a blow to the country by organizations defending human rights, including the National Network of Human rights (RNDDH).

"Charged in the killing of The Sawmill, Jocelerme Privert is within the scope of an order of the judge of the St. Mark-by reviewing the criminal court jury without assistance," noted the agency's rights humans in a recent report published in the partial Senate this year. Meanwhile, former Lavalas dignitary, according to a certificate of registry dated 1 December 2009, is being prosecuted in the Cabinet's instruction Palais de Justice in Port-au-Prince to the facts of skilled and looting of conspiracy to the detriment of the private television station Tele-Haiti.
For its part, Nahoun Marcellus, MP of the 47th Legislature, is running for Senate for the Northern Department under the banner of the platform INITE. In 2003, his U.S. visa had been revoked for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking. Former Lavalas dignitary is also the subject of a lawsuit brought against him by Radio Vision 2000 for his role in looting and vandalism perpetrated against the premises of the station in Cap-Haitien the night of 7 to 8 February 2004. The public threats had been leveled by former member against the station. The Senate candidate for the platform INITE for the Northern Department was also accused of involvement in the attempted assassination of journalist Peter Elicème occurred February 21, 2004 at Trou du Nord.

Biron Odigi, also charged in the massacre of the sawmill, is parliamentary candidate for the riding of Saint-Marc under the banner of the insider, compared by some to TITANIC. Coordinator at St. Mark's Lavalas party under Lavalas, he was also a leader of popular organization Bale Wouze infamous. The massacre of The Sawmill attack in February 2004 is attributed to that organization.

Dr. Sinal Sergot, parliamentary candidate for the riding of Port-Hi, is housed in the same boat as the former Lavalas officials. It is, in turn accused of raping a minor in 2008. A letter and a copy was sent to the newspaper is sent to the Electoral Advisor Ginette Cherubin by relatives of the victim to withdraw the candidature of the doctor. "My minor daughter was raped by Dr. Serge Sinai, chief physician in Port-Hi, in March 2008," reads the letter signed Yolene Pointe-Day. It said he had taken steps in the Ministry for Women, the Ministry of Justice and with organizations of human rights that the rape did not go unpunished. The fact that the doctor accused of rape is regarded as the son of Justice Minister, Paul Denis, remains a source of concern for relatives of the minor. In addition, both men are members of the same political party.

These candidates INITE indexed by the organizations of human rights could be the tree that hides the forest. But the list of candidates has not yet been made public by the Provisional Electoral Council. This does not allow organizations of human rights to be an exhaustive list of past black candidates.
